7 easy methods to learn and practice basic Thai neck massage. The following methods help to reduce muscle sprain and soreness caused from falling off pillows, reduce headache, increase blood circulation, balance body hormones, and reduce stress.

Basic Traditional Massage – Neck.  Method 1 “Squeeze neck”

This helps reduce headache symptom and soreness caused by head falling off pillows.

  • How to:  Have client sit on floor or chair.  Massage therapist stands behind client.  Right hand holds client’s head.  Left hand holds nape of neck and squeeze all the way down to neck.  Apply pressure on all fingers.

Basic Traditional Massage – Neck.  Method 2 “Press on Nape of neck:

This helps reduce headache symptom and sore from falling off pillows.

  • How to:  Have client sit on floor or chair.  Massage therapist stands behind client.  Massage temple with left hands.  Left thumb on client’s left temple and middle finger on client’s right temple (palm is over forehead).

Then, make “V” using thumbs and index fingers.  Place thumbs between ear bone and neck muscle.  Place index fingers on both temples.  Apply pressure.

Basic Traditional Massage – Neck.  Method 3 “Upper Neck”

This helps reduce headache symptom and sore from falling off pillows.

  • How to: Put both hands together (picture) over client’s neck.  Use thumbs to apply pressure on neck muscles beside spine line.  This is approximately 1 inch below upper neck line.  Put pressure on the rest of fingers.

Basic Traditional Massage – Neck.  Method 4 “Gently Massage neck and shoulders”

This helps reduce neck and shoulder muscle sprain.

  • How to:  Put both hands together (picture) over client’s neck.  Massage from neck to shoulders.  Apply pressure.

Basic Traditional Massage – Neck.  Method 5 “Press on neck”

This helps reduce headache and sore from falling off pillows.

  • How to:  Put both thumbs over neck muscle and apply pressure.  The rest of fingers on client’s head.  Keep applying pressure on thumbs and keep client’s head stay still.

This helps reduce sore on shoulders and neck.

How to:  Place both hands on client’s upper neck.  Squeeze muscles from upper neck to shoulders.  Apply pressure on all fingers.

Basic Traditional Massage – Neck.  Method 7 “Chopping Method”

This helps reduce sore of neck muscles.

  • How to:  Have client either lay down or sit with face down.  If lay down, put pillow under client’s stomach.

Place both hands together (picture) for chopping method.  Index fingers touch client’s neck. Massage (chop method – up and down) from upper neck to lower neck horizontal to spine line.

1. Introduce each other. Ask for client’s symptoms and honor massage gods.

1.1 Cross feet and push down left-right

 

1.2 Put pressure on both feet and rotate. Push feet and toes backward.

2.1  Warm up right sole.  Massage 3 positions by  using both thumbs back and forth.

2. Move to left side of client as in the picture below.

Position 1: Move your body forward (picture).  Straighten your waist and back.

Position 2:Push from your toes (knee down with toes up)

Position 3:Push from your toes (knee down with toes down)

Hand at Position 1: Thumbs at 180 degree angle

Hand at Position 2: Thumbs at 45 degree angle

Hand at Position 3: Thumbs at 90 degree angle

2.2 Massage ankle. Count from 1-10 and release

2.3 Start to massage calf with 3 positions back and forth. Use both thumbs (Sit and hand positions, refer to section 2.1).

2.4 Massage upper leg with palms. Put one hand over the other. Add body pressure (This is a massage for inside calf position 1).

2.5 Pull-Push on upper inside leg 3 times. Massage up and down.

2.6 Massage outside calf back and forth (position 1). This is a stress release massage. Put pressure on foot.

Traditional Thai Massage Introduction

Massaging has played a very important role in self-healing. Traditional Thai massage has been known since King V and King VI of Thailand.  A very popular Royal message therapist Inthewada, taught his sons Chid Thechapan, Grud, and Yai Seethawathin.

There are two types of Thai massage:

  1. The Royal Massage
  2. The General Massage (Chaleaysak)

 

  1. The Royal Massage is used in royal palace only.  Therefore, all methods are proper and they only use fingers to massage king and royal family.

 

  1. The General Massage is used within family or community.  Fingers, elbows, feet can be used.  The sessions are normally long to provide complete relaxation and can put clients to sleep.  This type of massage is very famous and well received.
